Minimal Glam

Glam looks without looking like you’ve walked out of a Mad Men episode? Possible! I took inspiration from Alexa Chung who know how to work what I call Minimal Glam. The trick is strip down makeup to the most basic elements.

I had a secret dream… I’ve always wanted to fully capture some of the amazing women I get to meet. Don’t get me wrong, I love photography, but video has been getting me very excited these days. That’s where Lea comes in. We not only photographed the looks on her but we also did a video montage of Lea doing her thing at the end of the post. I’m going to keep on doing these once a month!

Here is my little guide to getting the looks right:

Red Lips

The Red Lip
There is nothing more glamorous than a red lip, and it gives a lit from within effect. Pared with this little black dress by Denis Gagnon, you won’t need much more.
To keep it modern:
– Blend your lip pencil with a cotton bud, if you have to use one to define your lips.
– Don’t overdraw, or try to change the shape too much: hello retro!
– Go for softness. I used a sheer lipstick and I applied thin layers with no lip liner, because I wanted to create a soft pout as opposed to a very precise, and drawn-in mouth.

I used Maybelline’s Color Sensational lipstick in Red Revival and a black liner smudged into the lashes. The lace dress is from the SS 2015 collection, and is available through the Denis Gagnon boutique. The necklace is Lea’s own upcycling of a belt buckle she found at a sale.

Smoked Liner
Blame it on Bardot with her kohl rimmed eyes for starting it all. It’s also the perfect trick to make smaller eyes appear bigger and darker, all at the same time.
To keep it modern:
– Smudge black liner close to the lash line
– Extend with black shadow into a feline flick, use a liner brush for a precise line.

I used Xtreme Lashes GlideLinner in Xtreme Black and Make Up For Ever black matte M100 eye shadow, with Rain eye shadow by Stila on lids. On lips I used L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche lipstick in Jennifer’s Nude. The 3D rose print quilted sweater is available through the Valerie Dumaine e-shop. Necklace by Harakiri Design.

90’s Supermodel Glam
All those iconic pictures of Cindy and Linda can be distilled down to three elements: nude lips, loads of black liner and sixties hair.
To keep it modern:
-Don’t use lip pencil
-Don’t contour
-Don’t blush— or very little if you must.

The SS2015 sequined sports jacket is available through the Denis Gagnon boutique.
I used the Sephora Collection cream liner and smudged/set it with Make Up For Ever M100 black eye shadow. For lips, use a beige lip colour that is a tad lighter than your own skintone, for fair women I’m a big fan Rimmel’s Nude Delight, and pale it up with some foundation applied with a brush to the center of the lip.

Skin
To create the base, I used NARS Creamy Concealer sheered out with Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizer for a transparent coverage. I enhanced Lea’s eyebrows using the Guerlain Eyebrow Kit. For natural lashes, I wiped down the YSL Shocking mascara wand before application. For a barely there cheek colour, I used Rimmel Stay Blushed cheek tint in Sunkissed Cherry. The images were edited about 15% to remove some pimples,

Hair
Lea’s hair is just amazing on it’s own. According to her it’s because of the certified Spiruline supplements that she takes—it’s worth giving it a try! I used Moroccanoil Root Boost to get some lift at the roots and Oribe’s Après Beach for a soft texture. For a natural wave I used a large curling iron through the front sections.
