So I’ve been busy working on all kinds of projects, but when I got polaroids of Melissa, I just had to shoot her in some Summer Magic-al inspired makeup (lots of colour).

Somewhere in mid-June my camera broke down. It was an old hand-me down from a friend. It coincided with my vacay… So I found a part-time job to buy my new camera. A little note here: you don’t need the top of the line SLR, you just need something that will make you the images you need. What makes great images is having great ideas and a clear vision of what you are looking to create–NOT a big ass camera. I’ve bought the Canon EOS Rebel T6 to replace the old EOS Rebel Txi. I can tell you that from working with other photographers on their editing, and some use up to 40 megapixels and more, and it’s just too much information for a beauty shot. This camera is at 18 megapixels, and I find that with face close-ups, there will be less hours spent on retouching pores and facial hairs. (Lucky for me Melissa has no pores so there was a total of 30 minutes of editing for the 10 shots I chose).
Melissa and I just went to a park, near my home. I sit in the spot we shot, to practice my singing. I did a few selfies one day (just ’cause I’m vain like that but I don’t post them, just for me), and I found it had great potential for a backdrop to a beauty photo-shoot. Last week, the agent I work with sent me a polaroid of Melissa, just as I got my new camera. She was the perfect face for the super-nature-aural looks I had in mind. It was also a great way to see what this new camera could do.
I always found that, us blondes, look great with green. The yellow was inspired by a Pakistani resident who was wearing a sari, with a similar shade and sitting with her family near me, one afternoon I was practicing. Just goes to show: inspiration is everywhere if you take time to see what is really happening around you. The purple was improvised, mostly because the same week, I did a shoot with a photographer and she wanted purple makeup, but for these shots I wanted to push it to the extreme, because beauty shots are all about extremes. There is that same punk-y shape I like to do … oh well… but that’s ok. I promise to have more interesting ideas, when I shoot with Melissa again in a week or two, for a more studied editorial.
In the mean time, enjoy some Summer Magic thanks to Melissa’s fabulous face.
