The Magic

Dialing Up the Blonde Nineties

It all started with this denim jacket in red plaid, or tartan (whichever you prefer). Then I thought: why not do a Clueless look? Except, I’m not sixteen! So this is my version of the best of nineties glam makeup for blondes/redheads, the supermodel version inspired by makeup artists Kevyn Aucoin and François Nars.

Makeup used:
LIPSTICK:
MAC Chestnut lip liner was used to contour the lips, over concealed lips. I used a touch of a brown-reddish shade by H&M called Brandy Snaps, now discontinued. Over those shades I layered Lisa Eldridge’s Velvet Morning lipstick in the center. Between each colour, I powdered with translucent powder, and added a final layer to keep the lips on the verge of being matte, but I kept some sheen, especially on the center. Retro pouts from the 40s and 50s were in fashion, as well as maroons, deep mauves and brick reds.

EYES:
I used a vanilla shade and also a highlighting powder from the Kat Von D Shade and Light Palette. I used those vanilla shades as well to bump the highlights on my face. Then I layered the shades from the Colour Pop Uh Hun Honey palette to get a golden yellow upper brow bone. The lid is free of any yellow tone. I used brown lashes by Asian brand Miche Bloomin’ in 108 and glued them under my own lashes, this creates a deepened top waterline and a liner effect. I used brown mascara on the lower lashes.

BROWS
I used a Chanel 10 Blond clair pencil to sketch the main brow, Then the top of the brow was filled in with NYX Lift & Snatch in dark taupe. I used Laura Mercier in Blonde to deepen certain areas. Then I used a concealer the tone of my skin to blend in the under part of the brow, to thin them out. Brows were set using a clear gel.

CHEEKS:
I used many limited edition or discontinued products. I used a mauve blush on the front of my cheek, I used a more rusty brown blush at the back of the cheek and at the very front, a bubble gum tone. Nothe that they didn’t really contour the jaw or the forehead as heavily as it’s the fashion today. There is slight contour using Ben Nye contour powder in Neutral on the forehead and jawline.

Here is another view of my face to give you an idea of the cheek contour! I’m happy to have made looking very 90s!
